Global warming is causing the Arctic ice to melt, so that ships can sail from Europe to Japan via the Arctic ocean, saving 20 days on the journey. How will this affect Singapore, one of the busiest ports in the world? In the short run probably not much, but over the long term we don’t know. Hence Singapore is seeking observer status on the Arctic Council, even though we are located almost on the equator. - LHL
